Georgia-Pacific is seeking a self-motivated and driven individual for a Department Safety Leader role with our Palatka, FL paper mill. The Department Safety Leader will provide leadership and strategic direction for their distinctive department in the facility through the application of the business framework and principles. This role creates long-term value for the organization by ensuring risk is aggressively identified and mitigated, developing and aligning department Safety strategies that are consistent with company/division Health & Safety vision, and ensuring department leadership is trained and equipped to manage safety. The Department Safety Leader reports directly to the facility Safety and Health Manager.
Our Team
Palatka is located just south of Jacksonville and west of St. Augustine, FL. Our Palatka mill employs approximately 950 people has four tissue paper machines as well as two Kraft/Linerboard Paper Machines and produces consumer tissue products such as bath tissue and paper towels sold under the Georgia-Pacific brand names of Angel Soft®, Quilted Northern®, Brawny®, and Sparkle®.
What You Will Do
- Partner with department leadership to influence all area team members to embrace and achieve our safety strategies consistent with Koch’s Safety Vision
- Competing demands will require a strong process approach to work, strong organizational skills, teamwork, and the ability to establish, communicate and adhere to priorities
- Facilitate, identify, and drive key safety improvement plan opportunities in areas of responsibility
- Assist in the ongoing utilization of Hazard Identification Risk Assessments (HIRA) efforts - this involves partnering with operations to lead hazard identification and risk assessment efforts and identifying/implementing corrective actions that appropriately reduce risk
- Assist in the development and implementation of core safety programs - the core elements include, but are not limited to: Employee Exposure, Lockout, Confined Space, Emergency Preparedness, Excavation and Trenching, Fall Protection, Operational Learning, Mobile Equipment, Cranes and Rigging, Personal Protective Equipment, and Save My Life permitting
- Participate in incident investigations, utilizing Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) tools to enhance the organizations effectiveness to conduct investigations that focus on learning and improving our capacity to fail safely
- Coach and mentor personnel to facilitate ownership of safety at all levels of the organization
Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or Engineering
- Three (3) or more years of safety work experience in a manufacturing or heavy industrial environment
- Experience using Human and Organizational Performance tools
- Experience developing and implementing regulatory compliance programs and training
What Will Put You Ahead
- Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Graduate Safety Practitioner (GSP), or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification
- Safety experience in the pulp and paper industry
- Experience in establishing sustainable systems for compliance and continuous improvement
