Georgia-Pacific is seeking a Learning & Development Specialist for our facility in Big Island, VA. This position will provide strategic and tactical training leadership to achieve key operation objectives in safety, environmental compliance, reliability, production, quality, and cost. This position will focus on learning and development within the Production department but will be expected to provide support to the entire mill as needed. This position will report to the Mill Learning and Development Leader.
Our Team
Georgia-Pacific's Big Island, VA containerboard mill is located at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains on the James River and produces the paper used to make boxes. Half of the production is made from 100% recycle fiber and the other half uses about 25% recycle fiber. In 2015, a $50 million upgrade enabled the production of a higher return product. The mill employs about 330 people.
What You Will Do
• Work and communicate with area leadership team, mill leadership team, shift operations managers, trainees, and others to identify and address performance and knowledge gaps.
• Lead and mentor employees with behaviors and actions that advance our Principled Based Management ® (PBM ®) culture and the organizational vision.
• Participate in the development and maintenance of mill and departmental learning and development program which aligns with safety, environmental, and production goals.
• Own the training program and drive continuous improvement efforts related to operator job qualifications and assessments.
• Effectively manage multiple high priority tasks and projects with a sense of urgency
• Act as a liaison between the mill, the department, and outside entities (auditors, visitors, etc.) as needed.
• Prepare for and participate in departmental and mill audits as needed (internal and external).
• Participate in network learning and development activities as a representative of the Mill Learning and Development team.
Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)
- Experience developing and implementing process improvements and projects around learning and development.
- Experience using Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point, etc.)
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
What Will Put You Ahead
- Bachelor’s degree or other post-secondary schooling or higher
- Three (3) or more years of experience within a manufacturing operation
- Experience managing in a labor union environment.
- Training development background (i.e., SOP documentation, CBT creation, Implementation)
- Experience in Pulp and Paper, Power, Utilities, or Chemical industries
- Technical writing skills
