Flint Hills Resources is seeking a self-motivated, entrepreneurial individual with high integrity and strong planning skills to work as an Sr Automation & Controls Engineer to join our Pipelines and Terminals ICE engineering team at our Wichita, KS headquarters.
We’re looking for a candidate that is contribution motivated to foster teamwork and can find solutions to problems in the absence of rigid specifications and standards. A high level of initiative and critical thinking skills will be essential as you manage technical projects and find and communicate solutions to customers, peers, and management.
Our Team
The ICE Engineering Team (Instrument, Control, Electrical) is a group of approximately 20 Electrical Engineers and Automation Technician professionals that provide design, implementation, and commissioning support for 4000 miles of pipeline and approximately 30 refined fuels and asphalt terminals. This team has responsibility for all things electrical and manages both power and control systems design.

What You Will Do
- Designing, implementing & commissioning terminal instrumentation, automation systems, process control solutions, and electrical power distribution systems
- Performing PLC/HMI programming, equipment configuration, and design and drawing reviews
- Managing electrical and automation projects
- Define scope of work, develop estimates and schedules.
- Develop build packages (design documents and drawings)
- Track costs and mitigate risks.
- Oversee contractors and other team resources.
- Provide startup and commissioning support.
- Providing production support and troubleshooting for pipeline and terminal automation systems
- Taking part in a 24/7 on-call rotation (~5 weeks/year)
- Must be willing to travel up to 25% of the time, (travel averages around 25% but can have sustained peaks above that and is driven by project schedule and workload)
- Participation in the DOT Operator Qualification Program
Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)
- Technical or Bachelor’s degree in an electrical or computer engineering discipline OR 5+ years of relevant work experience in the automation and electrical field
- 5+ years experience in electrical engineering, automation, instrumentation and/or control systems (including troubleshooting)
- Experience with PLC/HMI technology (programming, installation, commissioning, troubleshooting)
What Will Put You Ahead
- Experience supporting the petrochemicals industry and/or fuel and asphalt pipelines and terminals
- Knowledge of the National Electric Code (NFPA 70)
- Experience designing and supporting low and medium voltage power systems (MCC, VFDs, Relays)
- Experience with Allen Bradley, Modicon and SIS PLC’s, as well as the Ignition SCADA system.
- Experience managing projects
- Experience working with DTN Guardian3 systems
- Experience integrating industrial control systems
- Managing, developing, and supporting SQL database systems (Oracle, MySQL, MariaDB, MSSQL)
- An understanding of network topologies, communication interfaces, and security
- Experience with systems administration (managing hardware and software, security, and specifications)
