Georgia-Pacific is seeking qualified safety professionals to consider for a Safety Specialist at our Halsey, Oregon facility! The position, which reports to the Facility Safety Manager, has responsibility for assisting in development, implementation, and maintenance of the Company’s Health and Safety programs for GP employees as well as contractors onsite. Our Halsey Mill is located on Willamette Valley and is centrally located near the beach and mountains with several forms of outdoor recreational activities. The Halsey Mill is roughly 30 minutes from the college towns of Corvallis and Eugene, and 90 miles south of Portland, OR giving abundant options for regional attractions and forms of entertainment. Georgia-Pacific employees can influence the long-term success of the plant, both in improving the efficiency of production and in helping to build a culture of Principle Based Management. This is a role with potential for advancement both within the plant and across the company.
What You Will Do
- Provide safety and health influential leadership for the site, with specific focus on ensuring that mill safety and health systems reduce risk and assure compliance.
- Facilitate risk assessments and improvement plan development and assist in identifying improvement opportunities and implementing corrective actions to reduce risk by utilizing the Risk Management System (RMS).
- Assist in the development and implementation of core safety programs - the core elements include, but are not limited to: Lockout, Confined Space, Safety Management Systems, Emergency Preparedness, Excavation and Trenching, Fall Protection, Incident Investigation, Mobile Equipment, Cranes and Rigging, Personal Protective Equipment, and Safe Work Permit
- Contribute to the selection, onboarding, and development of talent, resulting in continuous site-wide alignment with safety.
- Provide coaching and feedback to help individuals realize their potential and maximize overall contributions.
- Drive continuous improvement using tools and activities, including self-assessments and audit processes; incident/near miss investigations; metrics and targets (leading and lagging indicators); and periodic reviews of performance, culture, and talent.
- Assist in incident investigations, ensuring Human & Organizational Performance (HOP) concepts are utilized and are effective from both a prevention and recovery perspective.
Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or Engineering OR five (5) or more years of professional safety experience in a manufacturing environment
- Five (5) or more years of safety experience in an industrial, oil & energy, military, or manufacturing process environment
- Experience in industrial or military safety leadership influencing the organization
- Experience with OSHA, state, and local safety and compliance standards
- Experience with onboarding and developing employees and leaders, helping to foster a safety-driven culture
- Must have legal authorization to work permanently in the United States for any employer without requiring a visa transfer or visa sponsorship
What Will Put You Ahead
- Safety experience in chemical processes and/or pulp and paper mill
- Experience leading process safety programs
- Experience in leading a site to improved safety and performance
- Experience working in a pulp and paper mill
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
- Process Safety Management (PSM) Experience
- Experience establishing sustainable systems for compliance and continuous improvement
- Working knowledge of Human & Organizational Performance (HOP) concepts and methods
